NSW Government making $1.38B from electricity sales

According to an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald today, Coalition energy spokesman, Ian MacFarlane calculated that the NSW Government is earning $1.38 Billion dollars a year through the sale of electricity.

This contradiction of the ridiculous and blatantly misleading comments by Opposition leader Tony Abbot yesterday was breath of fresh air from within the coalition, with Malcom Turnbull weighing into the debate too.

Yesterday Tony Abbott claimed that “Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, had ”fabricated” the entire idea that over investment in electricity ”wires and poles” had caused price rises beyond the carbon tax”, and refused to commit the Coalition to regulatory reform.

Mr Abbot is obviously very confused about who is fabricating what.

Refreshingly, the recent energy debate has been rightly focused on clarifying and understanding  what our energy bills are made up in recent months with almost every regulatory body, industry association and energy commentator in Australia making the data concise and clear. FWIW, the attached graph is what the Australian Energy Market Commission said on page 18 of its report  on electricity prices in late 2011, clearly demonstrating that Transmission and Distribution account for more than 40% of electricity bills.

And this is not a new revelation fwiw; Professor Ross Garnaut highlighted this issue way back in 2007 when he completed the Climate Change Review.

This is excellent news for energy reform; we now have (at least some) bi-partisan acknowledgement of the critical importance of energy reform and the fact that the Carbon Price is far from the source of all evil when it come to electricity prices in this country.

Lets hope our potential leaders can start working with facts rather than misleading hyperbole and get on with the job of creating a future for our country – rather  than themselves.
